Miss L'eau
Get Involved

In the book Miss L'eau
(by T. Katz)
two kids decide to help organize
an Annual Clean-up event in their community.

You
can do the same,
or call City Hall to ask about an event
they may already have to keep your community clean!

To organize your OWN clean-up,
here are some suggestions to get you started:

Contact your local City Hall office and tell them about your clean-up plans.  They can offer you all of the advice you need on how and where to work in your community and tell you if you need special permission or paperwork to get started.

Call your local transportation (buses, highways)office and ask if you can borrow their safety vests for your volunteers to use during your event.

Make sure to tell your neighborhood trash service about your plans -- they can arrange to pick-up your trash bags at the end of your event.

Tell your newspaper, radio and TV station(s) all of the information about your event.
They might even send a reporter to interview you!

Make posters and ask local businesses if they will let you place them in their windows.
Be sure to go BACK, after your event and pick up your poster -- you can RECYCLE these for next year (changing the date, of course).

Supplies Needed:
Garbage bags
Heavy-duty work gloves
Plastic Buckets with handles
First Aid Kit
Sturdy shoes
Long pants
Sweatshirt/jacket (if it's cold)
Sunscreen (even if it's cold)
Hat and/or sunglasses
Sack lunch and beverages

  • For safety reasons, have adults help you.  You should have one grown-up to supervise every 5-10 kids.
  • Use the buddy system - it's always more fun, and safer, to work with a partner!
  • Wear heavy-duty gloves at all times.  Trash should never be handled with your bare hands.  Always ask an adult for help with any item that looks dangerous (anything sharp or jagged).  The adult should put dangerous items in a bucket (not a garbage bag) until the end of the clean-up session.
